What a legal psilocybin session in Colorado actually involves
If most of what you know about psilocybin in Colorado comes from headlines, the picture is probably blurry. Legal — but legal how? For whom? Where? What does a session actually look like, hour by hour? This piece walks through the basics in plain language: the law, what a license really means, and the shape of the day itself.
The law, in plain terms
In November 2022, Colorado voters approved Proposition 122, which became the Natural Medicine Health Act. Here’s the most important thing to understand about it: the law did not put psilocybin in stores. There is no retail sale in Colorado, and there is nothing to take home.
What the law created instead is a supervised program built on three requirements:
- A licensed healing center. Sessions happen inside a state-licensed facility — not in a shop, a park, or someone’s living room.
- A licensed facilitator. A trained, state-licensed facilitator is present for the entire session, from beginning to end.
- Adults 21 and older. The program is open only to adults 21+, and every participant completes safety screening before anything else happens.
State agencies license and oversee the whole chain — healing centers, facilitators, cultivation, and product testing — and set the rules everyone has to follow. The first healing centers received their licenses in 2025, which is why all of this still feels new. It is new.
What “licensed” actually means
A license is more than a certificate on a wall. In practice, it means ongoing obligations:
- The facility has to meet state standards for safety and preparedness.
- Facilitators complete a state-approved training program, with supervised practice hours, before they can hold sessions on their own.
- The medicine comes only from licensed Colorado cultivators and is tested by licensed labs.
- Screening, record-keeping, and safety protocols aren’t optional extras — they’re conditions of keeping the license.
We think this framework is the single biggest difference between legal, regulated care and everything that came before it. Our own licensing information is public — you can review it any time on our licensing page.
A session is a process, not an appointment
Legally and practically, the session itself is the middle of a longer arc. At SoulForest that arc has four steps: medical clearance, preparation, the psilocybin session, and integration afterward. Each step is explained before it happens, and nothing moves forward without your explicit yes. The services page describes what each step involves.
The day itself
The session takes place in a quiet, private room at our Arvada center — closer to a calm living room than a clinic. You’ll have met your facilitator before this day, during preparation, so you’re not spending the most important hours with a stranger.
A few practical things are true of every legal session:
- It lasts roughly five hours, and your facilitator is present the entire time.
- The details — comfort, music, what support looks like — are agreed on in advance, during preparation, not improvised on the day.
- You don’t drive yourself home. A ride is arranged before the session ever starts.
What a legal session is not
It’s worth being equally plain about the other side:
- It isn’t retail. Nothing is sold to take home, and no legal center will offer that.
- It isn’t medical treatment. A facilitator is not a doctor, and a session is not a substitute for your physician, your therapist, or your medications. A good center will never suggest otherwise.
- It isn’t a promise. Researchers are studying psilocybin alongside psychological support for depression, anxiety, and other conditions, and that research is ongoing. Experiences vary widely from person to person, and nobody can honestly guarantee a particular outcome. Be cautious of anyone who does.
What it costs, in the open
Licensed care has real costs, and we’d rather you see them before you’re ever in a conversation with us. Our fees are published — medicine, facilitation, and all four steps included — along with interest-free payment plans, on the session fees page.
Where to start, if you’re curious
Not with a commitment. The first step is a free 30-minute consultation — virtual or in person — where you can ask anything, including the questions this article didn’t answer. You can book a time here.
And one thing that matters more than any of this: if you’re in crisis right now, a consultation isn’t the right first step. Call or text 988 — free, confidential, 24/7.
